THE 47th annual dinner of the Border Rugby Referees' Society took place in Selkirk Rugby Club's Philiphaugh Suite on Saturday night, when a total of 96 referees and their guests enjoyed a highly successful evening.

The official welcome was given by the dinner's chairman, BRRS president John Montgomery of Peebles, who told the company how delighted he was to see such a good turn-out of members and friends. The 'Toast to the Society' was proposed by former Hawick player and president Terence Froud, with the reply coming from another Teri, touch-judge Alan Forrest.

Former referee George Murray then gave a witty and heartfelt tribute to the late Jimmy Lipscombe, who had been one of Border refereeing's most colourful and popular characters. The toast to the game of rugby was proposed by Bobby Frazer of Edinburgh University RFC, with chairman John Montgomery giving the vote of thanks.

A raffle was held at the dinner in aid of the children's ward at Borders General Hospital, and this raised the impressive sum of £357. Musical entertainment was provided throughout the night by Malcolm McEwan, Henry Douglas, Viv Sharpe, Drew Gibb and Sandy Heard.

Referees Required

The BRRS is currently experiencing a shortage of referees. There are a number of reasons for this.On the poititive side we still supply a number of officials to the SRU panel.Unfortunatelt however numbers are dwindling with very few people taking up the whistle from scratch.

The Society, along with Iain Heard, the Referee Development Manager, is trying hard to get new rcruits but this is proving to be very difficult, As such, the Border clubs have kindly agreed to help out by allowing us to advertise in club programmes.

We are looking to recruit people who are willing to give up their tine to referee at all levels. We are in serious danger of being unable to provide referees for games this season and urgent action is needed.

If you are an ex-player or interested spectator who wants to get involved on the park it is a great way to keep involved with the game and also to keep fit.Refereeing provides an ideal way of doing this.Whilts we would love to see one of our referees moving up the ranks to the SRU panel we are more then happy to welcome people who would only want to referee locally.

Refereeong provides tremendous opportunities to travel and be involved at a very high - level if you wist to do so.Training and coaching is provided to all newcomers and we are lucky to have some recently retired senior referees ready and willing to help out.

All Society referees rtecieve a kit allocation each season and also recieve travel expenses for matches. We also have a very active training and social side with weekly training sessions and monthly meetings.

Why not give refereeing a shot? With your help we can ensure all fixtures go ahead as scheduled.
