We left Gala at 9.00am and arrived in New York 18.30pm (13.30pm our time ). We were met by Mark then had a 30 minute drive to meet up with Scott, we then went for a meal at Egans and also had a couple of beers. Good laugh best one being George asking was there any sheep in the USA going down a treat coming from Scotland. We left about 10 and another 30 minute drive down to Manhatten to spend a couple of nights with Brad in his flat. 21 hours later from setting of we got to our sofas, woke about 6 and was getting picked up by Jem at 10.30am for a sight seeing trip.
Went out it was 83 degrees, we went to Ground Zero which was hard to believe seen Hutoson Bridge and many other sites with a few refreshments in between. Home about 17.30pm then out again by 18.00 for meal at Wheeltappers an Irish pub about 15 minutes away by sub, we met Peter and Jack. Home about 22.20 put the baseball on the TV trying to get used to the rules as we are going on Tuesday night.
Up at 6.30am today we were meeting Paul Bethe at 13.00 so the morning was our own. Sat nav George took control went to breakfast at Applebys on Times Square then took a tour and surprisingly we found our place of meeting. He took us to a jap restaurant both had to ask for a forkas we would still be there with the chop sticks. He then went back to work and again left on our own for sat nav George to find our way to Planet Rock and what a sight well worth the time and walking. After that we had to be home for 17.00 to set off for our 6 hour trip to Saranac No luck George, sat nav was finished for today. Arrived at 12.00 straight to bed up at 7.30am for breakfast at Blue Moon.
Had our meeting only one game each for the day Cess had over 35 game and myself over 45 easy start to weekend. I was first on at 14.00 went to give a team talk to come back and find Cess and Brand laughing because I had given it to the wrong team. Both came on ok game 61-0 and Cess 21-3 with his first yellow of the tournament. Home about 17.00 meeting the new refs coming in at the Blue Moon then up to the Mounteneer Rugby Club to be provided with free food and drink. Then down to the Water hole till one in the morning and decided to be sensible and come home because we were up at 5.30 for 6.30 meeting hard going for two old men.
Made the meeting both of us got 3 games mine were all at Saranac, Cess had one there and two at Placid. I game was club, 1 social and my first women’s game and to put more pressure on the social and womens games were the home team, so the crowd swelled to double. But surprise surprise both won the women 7-5 and men 6-3. After the rugby was finished then going back for the ref BBQ and the kangaroo court. It had to happen I was the one that they set up so they tried to say I never made the 22 for 1 of my trys, so they gave me a red nose, thick specs and a kite and told me to run about Saranac lake shouting “ I can fly I can fly” what a numpty I looked but it was a great laugh. After a good few beers it was up the street and what a night, home at two followed by George at 3.30 and had to be up for 6.30 meeting some very unhealthy refs at the meeting.
Made meeting only to find out none of us had got a game, but Brad asked us to run touch in the game he got social final, and one of the Canadian refs asked if we would do his final which was the over 45s so we helped out there. The final ground was switched this year to Bloomfield about 12 miles out of Saranac, as the usual pitch hire had went up in rental price. We started our trip home about 16.15 should be straight to bed when we get home and catch up with sleep. Moving out of Brads house tomorrow and moving in with Greg for a couple of nights.
Meant to be picked up by Jack at 9.00am and it was 10.15 before for he arrived. Then of to Jones Beach long island about 50 minute drive and boy was it worth it miles of golden beach. He then took us home, we met his mum and dad and then of to dinner not knowing to us that Greg’s wife Tracey had cooked us a meal and we were meant to meet Greg at 6 it was now 7 he was peeded. Got on train to his house on the out skirts of New York met his wife Tracey and little boy Sam his other two girls had gone to grandparents. We were shown the house that we were going to be staying in. Then we had to sit down to another meal and a couple of beers were we put I will never know but we had to make a big effort. Retired to bed about 11 into my first bed in a week and it was a big double GREAT.
We were up about 7.30 going into the city to do some shopping and look around. Again great direction with sat nav Cess, still 85 degrees done a lot of walking and presents bought. Had to be back to base 8 miles away for 15.30 then back into city for 18.00 to meet the boys for Yankee Game. Great night apart from result beat 5-2 by Blue Jays. Met Greg in Wheeltapper at 23.00.
Last day we were to be ready for 9.00 to get Greg into city and meet Mark at 11.00 at the Crystar building. Picked us up with his girl Karen, went for a boat trip up the Hutison and Statue Of Liberty back for a meal and to the airport for 16.00 with our flight home for 18.30. The trip was done but what a 9 days we both had, a trip that will stick in the mind forever more. Big thanks to both societies, for this great opportunity that myself and George had been given.
